Story

On the concrete slabs of the East Side Gallery, three puppets collapse. One bronze figure screams, blood falling from its eyes. Two pale marionettes dangle above on thin black strings.

In nineteen ninety, Marc Engel painted this mural the year after the Berlin Wall fell. He called it Puppets of a Cancelled Play.

The cancelled play was East Germany. The puppets were politicians who were no longer needed.

In February nineteen ninety, one hundred eighteen artists from twenty-one countries gathered along Mühlenstraße. They painted one thousand three hundred sixteen meters of Wall — the eastern side people had never touched.

Weather and hands destroyed the murals. In two thousand nine, the city rebuilt the Wall and called the artists back. Engel returned and repainted his puppets using softer purples and warmer oranges.

The strings stay cut. The play stays cancelled. Listen to the full guide and I'll tell you the story of the Wall's largest open-air gallery.
