Story
A Trabant bursts through the Berlin Wall, pink and blue concrete flying. The license plate reads November nine, eighty-nine.
This is Test the Rest by Birgit Kinder, one of the most famous images on the East Side Gallery.
Kinder painted it in nineteen ninety, spontaneously, right after the Wall fell. She wanted a picture you could grasp in passing.
She chose the Trabant, East Germany's car. Not damaged, not stopped. Breaking through without the slightest scratch.
The Trabi stood for the peaceful revolution. East Germans didn't need tanks. They broke the Wall themselves.
In two thousand nine, Kinder restored it and changed the title from Test the Best to Test the Rest, a critique of how Berlin handled the Gallery.
