Kinder was born in East Germany in nineteen sixty-two. She moved to East Berlin at twenty-one, worked for the national railway, and studied painting part-time.

In nineteen eighty-seven, with her employer's permission, she started painting the entrances to industrialized apartment blocks. Modest work, but she was making art in a surveillance state.

Then came November ninth, nineteen eighty-nine. The Wall fell. By spring of nineteen ninety, artists from twenty-one countries were rushing to paint what was left of it.

One hundred and six murals went up along a one-point-three-kilometer stretch of Wall on Mühlenstraße. The East Side Gallery, the largest open-air gallery in the world, was born.

Kinder wanted to paint a picture you could grasp in passing. She chose her Trabant. Not damaged, not stopped — breaking through without the slightest scratch.

The Trabant was East Germany's car. Lightweight, simple, made of recycled cotton waste and resin. It was a symbol of scarcity and ingenuity both.

In Kinder's mural, the Trabi stands for the peaceful revolution. East Germans didn't need tanks to break the Socialist Unity Party's rule. They broke it themselves.

She painted it spontaneously in nineteen ninety and titled it Test the Best, a play on the cigarette slogan Test the West that West Berlin advertisers used to taunt the East.

The mural made her famous worldwide. Test the Best became the face of the fallen Wall, reproduced on postcards, posters, every Berlin souvenir imaginable.

By two thousand nine, the East Side Gallery was weathered, crumbling. The city planned redevelopment along the Spree. Kinder was furious at how they handled it.

She restored her mural and changed the title. Test the Rest. A critique. The best had been tested, and Berlin's city planners were what remained.

The signature at the bottom reads Birgit K., March two, two thousand nine. The date of restoration, not creation. The new title stays.

Under the hood of a real Trabant, you'd find a tiny two-stroke engine. It made a rattling sound and belched blue smoke. But it ran for decades.

Today, most Trabants are gone. Rusted, abandoned, turned into scrap. Like the regime that made them, outlived and left behind.
