One hundred eighteen artists painted one hundred six murals along one point three kilometers of Mühlenstraße. The project became known as the East Side Gallery.

Two years later, in nineteen ninety-two, the painting was destroyed. Weather, vandalism, or both—no record says. For seventeen years it was gone.

In two thousand nine, the city of Berlin invited the original artists back to restore their works. Rodrigues returned and repainted the mural exactly as she remembered it.

She signed it with both dates: nineteen ninety and two thousand nine. The signature reads J. Zaleng, though her actual name is Ana Leonor Madeira Rodrigues. The reason remains unclear.

She later said she restored the painting for one reason alone: she loved Berlin. It was a personal declaration to the city, a gift.

The liquidators she depicted were real. Hundreds of thousands of Soviet workers, soldiers, and conscripts were sent into the contaminated zone to bury the reactor under concrete and metal.
