The buildings along Mühlenstraße were emptied. Families were forced to move. The river, the streets, the air itself — all of it became part of the death strip.

Between Oberbaumbrücke and Ostbahnhof, at least seven men died trying to swim this river. Werner Probst was shot in October nineteen sixty-one. Anton Walzer a year later.

This wasn't the outer wall that West Berliners saw. This was the Hinterlandmauer, the inner wall facing East Berlin. But Mühlenstraße was a protocol route for high-ranking visitors, so it was built to look pristine.

On October seventh, nineteen seventy-nine, Leonid Brezhnev stood in East Berlin for the thirtieth anniversary of the GDR. He'd just signed a ten-year economic agreement with the East Germans.

After his speech, Erich Honecker opened his arms and kissed him. The socialist fraternal kiss — a ritual borrowed from the Russian Orthodox Easter kiss of peace, repurposed as communist solidarity.

French photographer Régis Bossu was there. Out of a dozen cameras, his caught the decisive moment. Paris Match ran it across a double-page spread and titled it simply: The Kiss.

The image spread everywhere. It became the visual symbol of the Eastern Bloc — two aging men locked in a fervent embrace that was supposed to mean unity but looked like something else entirely.

Ten years later, on November ninth, nineteen eighty-nine, the Wall came down. Brezhnev had been dead for seven years. The GDR had collapsed. Honecker was in exile.

Two Berlin artists, David Monty and Heike Stephan, had an idea: turn this stretch of wall into the world's longest gallery. The GDR Council of Ministers agreed.

One hundred eighteen artists from twenty-one countries came. Starting immediately after the Wall fell, they painted the east side — the side that had faced the death strip.

Dmitry Vrubel, a Russian artist born in Moscow in nineteen sixty, took Bossu's photograph and scaled it up. Seven point two meters wide, three point six meters tall.

He cropped Honecker's head so it sits partially outside the frame. The composition itself became a statement: the GDR was always the smaller partner, half-visible, subservient.

The East Side Gallery opened officially on September twenty-eighth, nineteen ninety. Berlin added it to the monument register a year later. By then, three million people a year were walking past.

In two thousand nine, the wall was renovated. The paintings were erased. Vrubel came back to Berlin and repainted his mural from scratch, onto the reconstructed concrete.

Today the concrete shows decades of graffiti layered over the original. Thousands of visitors sign their names across the faces. The weathered surface, the signatures, the rust — it all becomes part of the story.
