Four months later, in February nineteen ninety, one hundred eighteen artists from twenty-one countries gathered along Mühlenstraße in East Berlin.

They painted one thousand three hundred sixteen meters of the Wall's eastern side, the side that had faced East Germany, the side people had never been allowed to touch.

By September, one hundred six murals covered the concrete. The project was called the East Side Gallery, and it became the largest open-air gallery in the world.

Engel's marionettes were bleak and surreal, deliberately disturbing. The desolate landscape behind them evoked Dalí; the screaming face, Munch.

In November nineteen ninety-one, the murals and this stretch of Wall were declared a national monument. But no one could stop the weather.

Rain soaked the concrete. Visitors touched the paint. The images began to fade. Local restorations happened in nineteen ninety-six and two thousand, but they were partial.

By two thousand nine, the Wall was crumbling. The city decided to rebuild the entire structure and invited every surviving artist back to Berlin.

Marc Engel returned. He repainted his nineteen ninety design on the reconstructed Wall, this time using slightly different colors — softer purples, warmer oranges.

The marionettes stayed the same: three figures, three collapsed puppets from a regime that no longer existed.

The title, painted in black on the concrete base, remained: Marionetten eines abgesetzten Stücks. Engel signed it with his initials, N.E.
